As spring begins, Rana Khayyatt, a masters student studying for an MSc in Animal Behaviour, is hard at work in our newly refurbished ant-lab. ‘For my project, I am  investigating the effect of distance on the foraging behaviour of leaf cutting ants. I am very interested in the behaviour of these ants and the facilities at MMU are well suited to this study. The colonies are housed in a humid and warm environment but foragers are able to access the lab through plastic tubing. We are able to attach boxes filled with forage at different intervals of the tubing. This is perfect for testing my hypotheses and I am really enjoying my project!’
